BULVERDE, TX -- Get out your favorite book and prepare for puppy kisses.

The Bulverde Area Humane Society's new summer program is keeping kids on track with their summer reading, and teaching shelter dogs social skills that make them more adoptable.

"It's amazing what it does for the dogs as far as calming them down," Liz Riley said.

She's the BAHS volunteer who started the program after learning about something similar going on in California.

Even the shyest of dogs have seen improvement since this kicked off a few weeks ago.

"We've had the same kids come in each week reading and those dogs are becoming closer to those children, it's just amazing," Riley said.

One of those kids is Reid Weaver. His four-legged reading buddy Lucas rarely warms up to anyone, but with Weaver it's a different story.

"Every time I go inside his cage, he walks up to me and lets me pet him," he said. "Then I read to him and he sits there on his bed listening."

One dog's been adopted as a result of the reading program. With kids like Weaver making sure their dogs know how to act around people, volunteers think more are soon to follow.

"I really want them to have someone to have a home with," Weaver said. "I really want them to be happy."
