Skin care for every age

Skin Care For Every Age

Our bodies change dramatically as we age. Can you imagine if you could forever get away with minimal activity and maximum fried food capacity while remaining fit? Reality is that your body would fight back and your health would be compromised; we need to adapt and change as we age to treat our physical selves with the care we need to be strong, healthy and beautiful. Of course, that includes our skin.

The products that work for you in your 20s will not be the same ones you use forever, and the objective of your skin care changes as well. As your priorities shift, you need to learn how to switch up your routine to accommodate for your changing complexion. At the Derma Health Institute, we are here to educate you to be able to care for your skin effectively and safely. Here are our top tips for keeping glowing skin at any age:

20s-30s

Your 20s are not far enough removed from your teen years to lose sight of acne care, but your 30s are the cusp of needing anti-aging treatment. In this transitional period, it is important to maintain the youth of your skin by fighting breakouts while avoiding the appearance of fine lines.

What to avoid: Stay away from anything too harsh on your skin – you typically will not need major exfoliation on a regular basis and should always avoid products with oil. Your natural oils are still active in your skin.

Choose these products:

Lotions: we recommend choosing a daytime lotion that is oil-free, water based and contains salicylic acid for acne control. Your nighttime moisturizer should have retinol for gentle anti-aging and tone repair as you sleep.

Cleanser: while you do want to actively fight breakouts, harsh cleaners will clash with your retinol products and may be too much for your mature skin. It is usually best to go with a gentle cleanser that is oil-free, gel based and contains salicylic acid for avoiding major acne.

40s-50s

As you move into your 40s and 50s (which is really the new 30, if you ask us), you know anti-aging products are now necessary, and you may even be experiencing age spots and dry or dehydrated skin. Your focus should begin shifting away from acne and toward treating the pigmentation and collagen production in your skin.

What to avoid:

Stay away from cleansers with high concentrations of alpha or beta hydroxyl acids, which can contain exfoliating elements that are too extreme for your aging and thinning skin.

Choose these products:

Lotions: choose a moisturizer for daytime with glycolic acid. This will increase your skin’s new cell production and keep it smooth and hydrated all day long. A nighttime cream with peptides will help to even pigment and increase collagen production as your body repairs.

Cleanser: find a gentle cream cleanser that is low in alpha or beta hydroxyl acids and which does not contain harsh exfoliating elements.

60s +

Because you may have many more health concerns to worry about as you reach into your 60s, it is important to go back to the basics of a very simple skin care routine as your skin ages. When you move into your 60s, your goals should be to protect your skin from harmful elements and promote its natural processes with all-natural products. You want to do everything you can to allow your skin to maintain its own natural oils and eliminate dark spots and sun damage without overdoing it with every anti-aging product on the shelves.

What to avoid:

Stay away from acidic products that can dry out your skin. You want your skin to remain supple, moist and glowing.

Choose these products:

Lotions: it has never been more important to choose a moisturizer for the daytime that contains SPF. Find a light, hydrating product that will protect you throughout the day. For your nighttime routine, choose a product with hydroquinone to help eliminate dark spots from your face and hands.

Cleanser: choose a gentle, simple cleanser without harsh chemicals or boastful qualities. You want something that will clean your face but has moisturizing properties that will not dry out your skin. Products that contain coconut oil or olive oil are very beneficial in helping you maintain natural moisture.
