MESA, Ariz. - On October 17, Guadalupe Cota -- also known as Lupe -- was recognized as an Outstanding Latino Educator here in the state of Arizona, along with 3 other teachers.

Chicanos por La Causa held the 19th annual Esperanza Latino Teacher Awards at Grand Canyon University Arena. It was there that we learned what makes Cota an amazing teacher.

“I was one of those students that had difficulty with school,” said Cota. “I had great teachers and teachers that wouldn’t accommodate my needs.”

Cota teaches English as a second language to first and second grade students at Stevenson Elementary in Mesa, Arizona.

“It’s not about the amount of money you are getting, to me it’s about that student that comes in, has a difficult time reading, speaking English at the beginning of the school year and by years’ end, they’re speaking, reading and writing, that says it all to you,” Cota said. “I have been teaching for 10 years, I want to teach until they tell me to leave…hopefully that won't happen for 25 years.”

To win this prestigious award teachers have to be nominated by their peers.

Cota thanked her peers and said she shares this award with them.

When a teacher is chosen, their school wins $2,500 and the teacher is awarded $5,000.
