MESA, Ariz. — The Mesa Police Department is responding to a shooting involving an officer on Sunday night.

Officers have responded to the area of 8th Avenue and Alma School Road for reports of a shooting, police said.

Officers got calls of a truck parked at an apartment complex for nearly six hours with two people slumped over inside.

When police woke up the two people in the truck, authorities said the driver started the truck and tried to flee, striking a police SUV. The truck continued driving erratically and rammed other cars.

At that point, an officer fired.

According to police, no officers were injured and the suspect, later identified as 23-year-old Diego Varela was arrested.

A passenger in the car, 26-year-old Melissa Hidalgo, was also arrested. Police said she had two warrants for her arrest.

No one was hurt during the shooting.

Police said Varela told investigators that he had been using drugs.
