A man died Thursday afternoon after being stabbed in a fight at Killip Elementary School in Flagstaff, according to police.
Officers went to the school around 3 p.m. after receiving reports of a fight.
Flagstaff police spokesperson Runge said the man in his mid-20s was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police were searching for a suspect earlier, but they do have a person of interest in custody. It's not yet clear if that person is the suspect.
The victim, who has not been identified, may have been at the school to pick someone up, police said.
"A person was sitting in their car, possibly waiting to pick up children -- another subject approached them and began yelling at him, opened his car door and stabbed him. Eventually the victim stepped out of the car, fell to the ground and the suspect ran away," Sgt. Runge said.
The school went on lockdown after the stabbing, and children were released through a door away from the scene once authorities verified that the area was safe.
Killip will stay open on its normal schedule with crisis workers on the premises to speak with those who need it.
Police are still investigating. They said there were children who witnessed the stabbing.
