It all started in 1992 with a challenge.

It was a leap year, and a company employee challenged people to use that extra day to make a difference in their community.

TEGNA stations across the country hosted projects on Saturday, Oct. 22, that serve local needs. Anyone can start a project or join a project by going to

"It has now grown to over 60,000 volunteers tomorrow will come together across the country in communities small and large to improve the lives of the people in their community through a variety of service projects," said TEGNA CEO Gracia Martore.
