Not all credit cards are created equal. Some are much better than others at giving you cash back and other perks.
"There are a lot of credit cards out there that will offer you tons of benefits,” said Lynnette Khalfani-Cox, who runs the website Ask The Money Coach. “Everything from travel rewards, free airline miles, hotel stays, discounts and even cash back offers."
"Overall, I really love the Discover credit card this holiday shopping season."
That card will match all cash back earned at the end of your first year. You can earn even more cash back if you shop with the card at Amazon and Target -- now through December -- because you'll receive five percent back on up to $1,500 in purchases and one percent cash back on everything else.
"The Chase Freedom card is a really good offer for those looking purely for cash back,” Khalfani-Cox said.
That card has no annual fee and gives you five percent cash back, on spending up to $1,500, in categories that rotate quarterly. Right now, the bonus categories include Walmart and department stores. Chase is also giving customers $150 after they spend $500 in the first three months.
However, with these perks comes a warning -- Americans have more than a trillion dollars in credit card debt. Khalfani-Cox advises this is not something you want to get into if long term debt negates any perks or savings you may earn.
