Coming soon: Downtown Phoenix 'micro marketplace' inside shipping containers

The 14,000-square-foot market place, located at 1st and Garfield streets, will feature 10 local spots to shop, dine and drink inside 19 shipping containers.

PHOENIX - Construction has begun on a new kind of shopping center in downtown Phoenix.

The Churchill, named after the downtown neighborhood Evans Churchill, is a "micro marketplace" housed in repurposed shipping containers, according to a press release.

Construction officially began after cranes dropped the containers at the site Friday morning.

The 14,000-square-foot market place, located at 1st and Garfield streets, will feature 10 local spots to shop, dine and drink inside 19 shipping containers. The Churchill also plans to host community events such as health and wellness classes and arts and education activities.

So far, The Churchill has revealed three of its tenants: Pobrecito, a cocktail bar; the first brick-and-mortar location of Freak Brothers Pizza food truck; and Cosas, a boutique offering gifts made by Mexican artisans.

According to the press release, the other tenants will be announced through The Churchill's social media accounts in the following weeks.

The Churchill is scheduled to open this spring.
