At the Weatherford Hotel in Flagstaff on Friday, a well-known holiday symbol came out on display.
The "Great Pinecone," which drops each year on New Year's Eve, was hoisted atop the hotel in downtown Flagstaff.
The "Great Pinecone Drop" has taken place every year since December 31, 1999. Thousands crowd downtown streets to see the show.
The pinecone actually drops twice -- once at 10 p.m. and again at midnight.
The free event also features music and fireworks. The hotel also hosts a New Year's Eve celebration in its Zane Grey Ballroom, which includes dinner drinks and access to the hotel's balconies.
