SAN ANTONIO – Before Marina Garcia and her Holmes Huskies volleyball teammates took the court, they waited for the national anthem. Mariana didn’t think she’d be the one singing.
The sound system wouldn’t play the CD, so rather than skip the patriotic pregame ceremony, Marina stepped up with her vocal skills.
"I noticed they tried working the CD. My mom was in the stands, she was like, 'Marina sing,'" she recalled.
Marina left her team line and picked up the mic, stunning everyone in the crowd.
"I've been wanting to become famous. I've been putting myself out there. Usually, I get ignored and don't get that many likes," said Garcia, who added that singing is second nature to her. "I've been singing since I could start talking and I've been in choir since third grade."
One of her favorite artists is Adele, and she loves singing her songs. Garcia has been playing volleyball since elementary school. She never thought she'd bring the two together on the court.
"I enjoy the sport and playing it," she said. "[That moment] gave me a lot of hope that I can [become a singer]."
She said she wants to try out for The Voice and continue playing volleyball.
Her coach, Laura Suarez, said that she can't imagine a better team player.
"It was amazing of her to do. I was super duper proud," Suarez said.
Garcia, a senior, will perform one more time next week before her last home game.
